Private Sushi Class: Guest Reviews
Guests of my private sushi-making class in Tokyo. Most classes begin with a walk through Tsukiji Outer Market to choose the fish, followed by a hands-on nigiri lesson in my studio.
This was a lovely personalized tour. Kenji is kind and knowledgeable and kids from 11-14 were engaged, as well as the adults. Loved meeting another small family (3 in ours, 3 in theirs) intimate and informative!
— Saraha, San Francisco · January 2024
This is an excellent experience. You start at the fish market and then go to his workspace to make sushi. My kids (11, 12) and I loved it. Fabulous quality fish paired with patient, fun instruction.
— Victoria, San Francisco · January 2024
What a fun experience! My wife and I enjoyed every minute of it – Kenji is very knowledgeable about sushi and answered all our questions at the fish market. It was such a unique experience to select the fish from the market and then prepare it yourself to eat. Kenji made the sushi making part of it fun and not too serious, but we learned a ton! We feel like we could definitely prepare sushi back home ourselves and for our friends now. Would definitely recommend this tour! Also, Kenji hosts other types of tours around Tokyo – so if sushi making isn’t your thing, check out his other tours. He is so much fun!
— Caleb, Seattle · September 2023
I had the pleasure of having this experience all by myself! Kenji was extremely hospitable, and cared a lot about helping learn good technique for my future nigiri making endeavors back home. He took me to his local grocery store, and we discussed ingredients and made purchases in a very laid-back manner. He had the equipment to make this an authentic experience, with a bonus of remembering to take fun pictures, and accompanying the event with good music and conversation. Highly recommend!

As a globally recognized Japanese walking tour guide, Kenji’s steeped in Japanese culture and history. Pulling from his unique experiences he provides a rare opportunity for guests to hear the context of the culinary adventure, starting at the Tsukiji Fish Market. As a Japanese Sushi chef, Kenji’s knowledge of sushi, sashimi, and nigiri is quite extensive. What is even more impressive is his ability to walk guests through the process, (I do, You do, We do) so you can have your own Sushi experience party when returning home with friends. As a recognized commercial food photographer, you even get to photograph the delectable works of art, before tasting them, one last time. Most importantly, Kenji, tailored his talents around our outcomes for an unforgettable sushi experience which is to be commended. His kindness and extremely accommodating approach will have us recommending and chatting up his sushi class to many of our globetrotting friends for years to come.
— Jan, Wisconsin · July 2023
It’s my first sushi making class so it was a new experience! We went on a Wednesday so a lot of the places inside the market were closed so I was a little sad about that. But overall it was enjoyable and we got to eat the sushi we made!
— Tina, San Francisco · July 2023
Very interesting experience. We made nigiri sushi ourself and they were amazing! Very big chose of fish. You really can try almost everything you want and even the one’s you didn’t heard about!
— Michael, Italy · July 2023
Wonderful presentation on the creation of the finished sushi product. Kenji takes time to make sure you understand the repetitive process needed to produce a perfect piece of sushi. Was a great class that I will be taking again next time I’m in Tokyo.
— Christopher, San Francisco · July 2023
I just recommend this experience for who want learn how to make sushi for real. Great teacher, good time! Arigato!
— Alberto, Italy · July 2023
Kenji and his partner were fabulous attentive hosts who did a great job teaching my family, including our kids ages 20 and 16, the fine points of making nigiri sushi. They were also sensitive to our tastes and preferences. The sushi itself was outstanding, far better than what you would find in top tier restaurants in the US. I highly recommend this experience!
— Alain, San Francisco · June 2023
Great experience… liked it so much, I did it twice
— Christopher, San Francisco · June 2023
This sushi making experience with Kenji was amazing! It started with an interesting/informative shopping experience at Tsukiji outer market. Then we took the subway to Kenji’s neighborhood and home office space. Kenji was detailed and patient while teaching us the steps and intricacies of creating nigiri sushi pieces… from how to hold the fish properly, how to roll and weigh the rice pieces, to the cultural explanations. Highly recommend Kenji and this experience. We loved it!
— Deborah, San Francisco · April 2023
Kenji created a special tour just for my wants. The sushi making was a highlight. But the best was how welcoming Kenji-san and Tomomi-san were to me. They are both wonderful people and I had a truly unique experience.

Food and Night Tours
Kenji was fantastic and the food we ate in this tour was incredible. Kenji is clearly someone who appreciates good food both traditional and with a modern twist. We tried sake for the first time as well as a range of other dishes we would not have known to try without kenjis help. Kenji answered all my questions about what else to try on our trip. We loved being welcomed into restaurants where no other tourists were. This tour is the best!!! Bec and Dan
— Bec & Dan, Texas · September 2023
Fantastic experience, doing ‘discover Tokyo with a Host’. Kenji was amazing, so full of knowledge, and his English is fantastic. We went to places I didn’t know about, and it was great fun.
— Rob, San Diego · September 2023
My wife and I loved our food tour of Nakano with Kenji. We went to three different restaurants in Nakano that we would never had found ourselves and Kenji’s expert guidance and knowledge led us through the menus to have some of the best bites of our whole trip! Kenji then took us to Golden Gai for some final food and a drink at another local spot. Kenji was super interesting to talk to and we had an absolute blast spending an evening with him. Highly recommend!
— Jared, San Francisco · September 2023
LOVED this tour. Slightly off the beaten path we were able to see where the locals dine on a Saturday night. We went to three different spots with very different vibes and food but all amazing and delicious. Kenji was so fun to dine with and we appreciated his knowledge on food and culture.what s great tour!
— Amanda, San Francisco · September 2023
Kenji was great, we had an amazing time trying foods at nakano. The waygu place was the best ever. Would definitely rebook with him
— Wemdell, USA · September 2023
Kenji was kind enough to come meet us at our hotel and take us to a very traditional area. The food choices were very delicious and planned well. We got to see areas we would have never gone without a guide and taste the real Japanese food
— Jeanette, Sydney · September 2023
Kenji’s food tour of Nakano was the highlight of our trip to Tokyo. Kenji’s was an absolute pleasure to organize and communicte with prior to the tour. He met us and took us to 3-4 of his favorite food and drink places. We felt like we had a friend in Tokyo who was showing us around the city. Kenji not only took us to amazing places to eat but was great company and answered all our questions about living in Japan. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND to anyone! Especially if you are looking to see Japan as a “local”
— Todd, USA · September 2023
He customized the evening bases on the needs and preferences of our group of 6! We had a unique and delicious food tour with him!
— Tina, USA · July 2023
I loved this tour. We did this after 5 days in Tokyo and still manage to see things we didn’t see before. It was all about the food and it was awesome food and great company. We had a great time and would do it again.
— Jessica, San Francisco · May 2023
Wow! Kenji customized a tour for us, taking us through busy streets and alleyways of Tokyo. We did four places total, starting with an “underground” quaint sake bar that made you feel like you traveled back in time 50-75 years. Afterwards we went to an excellent tempura restaurant under the train tracks that is like nothing on earth we’ve been to, even after visiting 12+ countries before Japan. Kenji made us feel like a local, taking us to places most tourists can’t find easily. Just hire him already.
— Huy, Arizona · April 2023
We are so glad that we hired Kenji to be our local food tour guide. We asked if he could meet us at our hotel, instead of the train station as advertised on his web site, to ease our anxiety of being in a strange city. He easily agreed. As soon as we met him, we knew we would have a great time. He is very friendly and thoughtful. He asked us a few questions and customized a wonderful evening for us. We felt as though we spent a great night eating wonderful food with a good friend.
— Ron, Seattle · March 2023
Nakano is well worth a visit when going to Tokyo. The food & drink scene is spectacular and Kenji was our private tour guide to navigate the many things that Nakano has to offer. Kenji was in every respect a very knowledgeable and attentive host and provided a program combining sampling of traditional Japanese street food and drinks as well as Nakano cool cultural experiences. Kenji was great company and took us to places where each new eatery proved to be a treasure in both experience and taste. We had a great time together with Kenji and can warmly recommend him as tour guide to other travelers. Any future stay in Tokyo will certainly include a visit to Nakano.
— Harald, Norway · November 2022
We had a great time, Nakano was really interesting, and Kenji was very entertaining.
— Jacopo, New York · November 2022
The tour was of a charming part of Tokyo, with lots of traditional Hapanese speciality restaurants lining the lantern lit streets. Kenji was an excellent guide and companion.
— John, Australia · October 2022
Kenji Made my last evening in Tokyo unforgettable! I spent 4 hours walking through Nakano …tasting the most traditional to the most innovative of Japanese food and drink. I would’ve never ordered the stuff he did …seasonal fish varieties and restaurant specialities and perfect sake pairings. He even included a walk through Nakano Broadway providing a glimpse into the incredible world of Madarake. But the best was making me a part of the conversation with locals in the bars and restaurants..precious!
— Arvind, San Francisco · August 2022
Our guide, Kenji, met us at our hotel and showed us a great time through the nightlife of Tokyo. That was even after we asked for some last minute changes he was able to be flexible and find some great spots for us to enjoy. Kenji was knowledgeable and thorough and i would highly recommend his tours.
— Geoff, Australia · December 2020
I cannot say enough wonderful things about Kenji (our guide). We had a great time wandering through the amazing food court beneath the department store! He gave us great advice all along the tour about great places to try on our own, along with interesting bits of local knowledge! He took extra effort to connect with and find out what each of us were interested in tasting. We tried some great foods all along the way. 10 stars ⭐️! Unfortunately a few of us had a small mishap while crossing the street on our way to one last stop and Kenji had to come to our rescue and hail us a cab. The rest of the group were able to carry on without us and ended the tour without us.
— Karen, Australia · February 2020
Kenji was very personable ! We were a group with varied ages and I liked that he went out of his way to engage with all members of the group! We learnt a lot about Japanese food and felt that he enjoyed being out with us and learning about us as much as we wanted to learn about him and like in Japan. He definitely made our group feel very comfortable. Kenji is an amazing tour leader and is very well suited to this type of tour !!! We have used Tours with Locals in the past in Europe and this is exactly the same and the reason we will continue to use where available on our travels!
— Nicole, Australia · February 2020
We did not want to get trapped in the touristy area of Tokyo so our wonderful & fun-filled tour guide, Kenji-san took us to the wonderful & exciting back-alley of Nakano! He was so kind to pick us up from our hotel and educate us as to how to get a metro card to operate the subway system. We loved the lights and the atmosphere of Nakano. This was our first time experiencing standing only izakayas’ which we had so much fun. He brought us to wonderful sake/sashimi places to eat at. The people in the restaurants were so friendly. A couple of regulars at one of the Izakaya’s, were so hospitable that they had also treated us to the last sea urchins on the menu. The best I have had in my life! Kenji brought us to the best sashimi places, according to my husband, the best sashimi he has had by far in Tokyo. We really enjoyed Kenji, thank you for a wonderful experience! It will not be our last. With sincere gratitude, Lorie & Andrew (NYC-USA)
— Lorie & Andrew, New York · November 2019

Great knowledge about good local restaurants. The food was excellent and we learnt a lot about Tokyo. We have been on food tours in other contries and this was one of the best. “
— Lise-Lotte · June 2019
We had a really fun time with Kenji in Nakano, where he took us to three excellent restaurants. Kenji was a great guide and gave us lots of information and local color as we went around. All four of us (from America, Italy, and Germany) thought the evening with Kenji was a highlight of our trip to Japan. We highly recommend Kenji for this tour or any other tour he conducts.Thank you again for a memorable evening which we will talk about for years to come!
— Malcolm, New York · May 2019
We did 4 different tours in Tokyo. “Tokyo’s nocturnal playground”, and “Eat and drink like a local”; this two where probably the highlights of our trip; both host, Kenji and Sergio; they are fun, knowledge and very helpful. I will definitely recommend this company; we change few times the days and book last minute and they were super accommodating, so if you don’t know Japan you definitely need somebody like them!
— Ines, Australia · October 2018
We had Kenji for 4 hours one evening in Tokyo to take us to some amazing eateries and bars. It was my wife’s birthday and what a great way to celebrate. The all you can drink sake bar was a big hit.
— Marty & Jo, Australia · July 2018
I had a long overnight layover in Tokyo. I wanted to experience the city in the most efficient way. Kenji was the perfect guide, he was able to schedule and design a night crawl tour based on my preference. We met at Shinagawa train station and then explored Shimbashi and Ginza districts. Sushi, sake, wagyu beef, shopping, bars, etc. What a night! Thank you, Kenji!!

Sightseeing and Day Trips
Kenji comes highly recommended as an exceptional guide, especially for families with young adults. Our experience with him, along with our two sons aged 21 and 18, was remarkable. He introduced us to the Shinto traditions at Meiji Jingu Shrine, guided us through Harajuku’s hidden alleys, and showed us the vibrant anime, manga, and pop culture scenes near Shibuya Crossing. Our journey continued through the lively Golden Gai and Kabukicho in Shinjuku. A highlight was the lunch at a quaint sushi spot, serving the best sushi we’ve ever tasted. Kenji’s flexibility in accommodating our interests made our tour truly memorable.
— A family from the US · January 2024
Kenji is excellent, very affable, interesting and knowledgeable. Our tour of the Meiji Jinju shrine was most memorable.. Kenji helped us understand the history, culture and traditions that made the experience unforgettable. We saw the Kubiki-theater, some of Ginza, and unfortunately the Tsukiji fish market was closed on Wednesday but we had a good visit of the local area and we were able to visit the Sushi Academy where Kenji trained. Overall a great experience and helped us acclimatize to Tokyo. Very much recommend especially if this is a first time to Tokyo.
— Robert, Boston · September 2023
Great tour! Kenji took us to some great sights and was great at explaining the local culture. Kenji was very flexible with what we wanted to experience and was able to provide unique experiences like saki sampling and front row sushi. He is very personable and a good sense of humor. We would definitively tour with him again.
— Aneal, San Francisco · September 2023

— Jiri, Czech Republic · September 2023
Our tour with Kenji was great. He was easy to contact and replied quickly to our emails. He tailored our day to all the things we wanted to see and was flexible along the way with breaks for shopping and snacks. He was great with my teenage kids, engaging them in conversation along the tour. He knew all the best spots for pictures. We also had a sushi lesson with him with was a lot of fun! I would highly recommend.

Kenji was awesome, showed us some great places, and a very friendly guy. Hope he can make it to Oregon someday so we can take him for a beer!
— Kirk, Oregon · June 2023
We had the best day with Kenji. He was very experienced around the Kawagoe area and made the experience very enjoyable for our family. Highly recommend and looking forward to seeing him again on our next visit to Japan. We visited the shrine, castle and did some shopping. Lunch was awesome too. Highly recommend
— Ceilia, Australia · June 2023
Thank you to Kenji, he was very knowledgeable and took us to all of the places we wanted to see. He gave us much information that we would not have known and we really enjoyed seeing the shrines and Tokyo Dome. It was very beneficial to have him guide us on our first day in Tokyo and explain the train system so we could use that information for the rest of our trip. Thank you Kenji!

We had a fabulous day with Kenji on a very rainy day. The pacing was excellent, he was flexible and attentive to the needs of our 5 person family group. He is knowledgeable and delightful, with excellent English. We saw a lot of Tokyo in a fast paced day. Thank you Kenji. Great lunch choice too. He is also a photographer and sushi chef!
— Cindy, Colorado · April 2023
We hired Kenji for our 1st visit to Japan. He’s worth it! We saw SO much. Our 2 days with Kenji easily would have taken 4 days on our own. He did 2 big things for us: (1) He showed us how to navigate Tokyo easily, enabling us to explore more of Tokyo independently. And (2) he helped us experience Tokyo as a local, taking us to hidden places most tourists can’t find unless they speak Japanese and know the area. He took amazing photos for us, taught us how to make sushi, and treated us like great friends do
— Huy, Arizona · April 2023
Kenji was very personable. We appreciated that at the start of the tour he asked each of us what our interests were and was willing to modify the tour to cover those areas. He paid attention to every detail and led us through the busy streets and metro stations of Tokyo with ease. We stopped at his favorite sushi restaurant for lunch, and his recommendations made for an absolutely delicious meal. He was very accommodating, attentive and professional. Take a tour with Kenji! You will enjoy every minute!
— Debra, New York · April 2023
We really enjoyed our tour with Kenji. The tour covered a good taste of old and new Tokyo, and was just what we needed to get our bearings in the city. Kenji was really flexible to our interests, e.g. showing us the clock made by Studio Ghibli founder at just the right time to see it in action, after our teenagers told him they like those movies. Would definitely recommend.
— Julia, San Francisco · April 2023
Kenji was awesome!!! He’s full of energy and enthusiasm and made it a lot of fun for me, my wife and especially my two daughters (8 and 11). He could give history and background, joke around with all of us, and showed us well known and hidden places. Flexible with itinerary and before and during the trip. Best guide in Tokyo!!!
— Ali, Boston · April 2023
Pleasant experience and Kenji was able to customize our day by adding more places to make the best use of the time , even thought it was a last minute change. Highly recommended!!
— Monaf, Boston · March 2023
Kenji was not only a tour guide, but we felt he is a family member. Caring professional, easy to work with. We loved every second of the day. Thank you from Boston (M & F).
— Monaf, Boston · March 2023
Kenji is fun and knowledgeable tour guide. Unfortunately, we had a very rainy day. Despite the weather, Kenji was able to make the most of the day and we felt we got the best tour of Tokyo. He made it a memorable tour!
— Gigi, San Francisco · March 2023
We booked last minute and came pretty unprepared. Kenji proposed a tour according to our preferences and always checked, whether we like it or if we would rather change the plans.
— Collete, Paris · February 2023
A great day in Tokyo! A family of 4 (including 2 late teenage boys) were given a great tour by Kenji, on New Year’s Eve. Having spent time seeing shrines and temples in Kyoto, we were looking to see more of Tokyo contemporary life, and Kenji showed great flexibility and skill in delivering on this brief, with our teenage sons saying it was one of the highlights of their holiday – no small feat! The tour included a ‘local’ place to eat which we would never have found on our own. Strongly recommended!
— Richard, San Francisco · December 2022
We had a nice and special time with Kenji k. He showed us all the secret and special places and foods around Shibuya and Ginza. He is very friendly, open minded, funny and knows his stuff very well. Kenji also gave us many tips for our stay in Tokyo. We would book him again and can really recommend him. He completly adjusted to our needs and wishes. It could not be better.
— Julia, Germany · October 2022
Kenji was dynamic and very energetic. He documented our”steps” for the day and by the end of the tour we had close to 17,000 steps for the day! He had prepared our tour and presented it to us during a morning briefing, he asked us what we thought, he was very flexible and amenable to our desires and took us into consideration. He made changes as needed, which made it for an amazing day all around. On top of that, he brought his own camera to take impromptu pictures of us during the tour-tour was priceless
— Joseph, USA · August 2022
Kenji was fantastic- travelled with my elderly mother and found this personalised way to see Tokyo was spot on. Tailor made to what we wanted to see and it didn’t disappoint. Would really recommend this for first time visitors to Tokyo.
— Lisa, Australia · March 2020
My husband and I spent our second day in Tokyo with our guide Kenji, and cannot say enough good things about him and our experience! We had 8 hours and Kenji, who filled every minute with something interesting to see, do, eat, and learn! From sushi in Shibuya to gaming in Akihabara, it was an incredibly special experience that we would recommend to anyone looking to make the most of their time in Tokyo!
— Jenna, Australia · February 2020
Our guide Kenji met us at our hotel in Shinjuku , we found him to be friendly and very knowledgeable.we visited a shrine, where he explained Japanese beliefs which was very insightful.Kenji covered a lot of territory including Shibuya,,a hedgehog cafe(wife’s idea) , subway travel and a 1950’s Japanese suburb the 7hrs went very fast, the robot dog was so life like I almost purchased one Finally Kenji pointed us in the right direction to the subway with directions for a easy ride back to the hotel.
— Jenna, Australia · February 2020
We did the 6 hour walking tour with Kenji, our local guide. Kenji was informative and very helpful. It was excellent and we saw many areas we wanted to see. Highly recommended for a first visit to Tokyo. My only comment to improve on is the guide did not properly study our questionnaire we completed in detail beforehand and was not well prepared in planning the most efficient trip. I recommend more time is spent in reading and studying the guest’s wishes.
— Anton, New York · September 2019
We had so much fun with Kenji! It was our first time in Japan and he introduced us to the rail system and how to get around. He even took us to some local places that he frequents. The food and the people of Japan were amazing and I didn’t want to go home. The best part is that Kenji was able to personalize our tour and kind of “Wing it”. For example, we had another tour the next day and wanted to know how to get to our meeting place. Not only did he show us the easiest way to get there, but he also recommended some great attractions to check out on the way. He also recommended some amazing food places and we just had an overall great time! I would highly recommend this tour and Kenji as your guide!
— Dexter, USA · September 2019
Travelling alone, I wanted to make the most of my time in Tokyo and be introduced to some interesting neighbourhoods. Kenji was a wonderful host. He personally picked me up from my hotel and we spent a full 5 hours exploring some “off the tourist strip” spots in Tokyo. Thanks to his tips, I was able to navigate my way back to a number of these spots and as well, he helped me master the Tokyo Subway (which at first can be a little daunting). Great tour to commence your stay in Tokyo.
— Lorraine, USA · August 2019
Kenji was amazing!! Tokyo can be an overwhelming place to get around but Kenji made it so easy for us. We feel like we got to see Tokyo properly because of him. He’s so fun to talk to and also knowledgeable about the city. We saw so much more of the authentic Tokyo thanks to Kenji. We highly recommend him!!

Kenji was able to take us everywhere we wanted to go in one day. Including shrines, sushi, Ueno park, Shibuya, and Shinjuku. We learned a lot about the history, culture and customs in Japan. I would definitely recommend this tour and especially Kenji.
— Diana, Australia · July 2019
Kenji was very nice and very helpful. We saw the good sights and he did a great job in describing their history and importance. He was flexible in accommodating special needs (I hurt my foot a few days earlier and was a litte limited in walking). He gavie us a good feel of how locals see and live Tokyo (at least the .001% of Tokyo that any tourist can see in a day :).
— Bruce, USA · May 2019
Fantastic tour of Tokyo with Kenji. He planned the tour around the sorts of things that we wanted and found an excellent place for a quick lunch. Kenji was full of interesting information and made the day go really quickly. Great guy great tour. Thanks Kenji

Our guide Kenji spent a few hours showing us the highlights of Tokyo. It was a pleasurable day and we saw and experienced so much. He is a fun guy who is easy-going and knows his way around the city and major attractions. I hope Kenji is available for your tour date(s).

Kenji our guide met us and covered all the highlights in Tokyo we wanted before joining a formal tour. He took us to some local neighborhoods where we had a terrific lunch and got to meet some of the local ladies on an outing decked out in their Kimonos. Kenji was great at getting us around the underground sytem and pointing out areas of interest. He brought us to a few smaller temples and shrines where we could learn about the customs and protocols of visiting these areas.Overall a great day.
— Sandra, Australia · April 2019
A private tour with Kenji involving my family – including four grandchildren aged 12 to 15 – was perfect. Our brief for Kenji was to take us to places we would otherwise have not known about, and this he did: Cherry Blossom was the main focus with two different locations just so beautiful! The most enjoyable part of the tour was, however the interaction we had with Kenji – especially that which he had with the children. Kenji has a wonderful personality, good humour and all with excellent English. Our time with Kenji was a real highlight of our two weeks in Japan.
— Graeme, Sydney · April 2019
As we were in town only for a day and a half, we decided to have a guided tour. We saw everything we asked for and even more. Great anticipation to all the members of our family’s wishes. A day to remember, thank you very much Kenji!

We took about an hour by Subway to get to Kamakura. Kenji met us at our hotel perfectly on time. He explained the difference and inclusiveness of Shinto and Buddhism and took us to the Engaku-ji temple – origin of Zen in Japan.

We booked an incredibly enthusiastic photographer for our first night in Tokyo. If you’re seeking stunning night-time couple photos in Shinjuku, I highly recommend him. Impressively, we received our photos within just two days, and he was accommodating enough to provide the raw photos upon request. Additionally, his recommendation for a meat-centric restaurant was spot-on, perfectly satisfying our hunger after the shoot.
